photograph of Liz Crook, blog authorThe Moorgate Mill scheme based in Blackburn Lancashire has been built and designed to offer positive solutions for those with care and support needs, who wish to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible in an environment which is suited to their changing needs. Living in this well-designed specialised housing scheme has been instrumental in the improvement of the individual’s health and well being.

This fantastic scheme has enabled individuals to live independently in a safe and secure environment, instead of a hospital or residential care.

A range of technology enabled care solutions have been integrated within the building design to create unique individual living environments. These technology solutions work collaboratively with an individual’s assessed needs and support them to achieve personal outcomes. They also ensure the individuals live safely and as independently as possible.

Each person has achieved personal outcomes from this change of life opportunity and we would like to share their personal comments.

Jane
Jane is a physically disabled wheelchair user with complex learning disabilities. Prior to Moorgate Jane lived in a residential unit which was not meeting her needs and impacting on her health and well being. This then impacted on her family’s health and well being also.

Jane is now so happy with her new life at Moorgate. Jane worked closely with her support broker to identify her equipment needs.

“I could not turn the TV on, open my door, go out in the garden or socialise with friends before Moorgate Mill.”

“I can do all these things myself and I am so happy here. You are all brilliant and thank you for everything you do. You made me very happy. The staff are brilliant.”

Joe
Joe is a young adult with autism and additional problems. Before Joe came to Moorgate he had very little independence or freedom in his life. Since moving to Moorgate he can get out and about by himself due to using his GPS mobile device, so support is only a button press away. He is able to reside in his flat alone with the use of technology in place of staff support. He shared:

“The building is very safe and the TV’s are brilliant, you get internet and everything on them. You cannot get into the building without a fob. Staff are great. We do gardening and can even go fishing.”

All have been on an incredible and personal journey to achieve their wishes and aspirations and have achieved so many personal outcomes. Now citizens living in the community who have the same rights and access as everyone else, with choice and control being at the forefront of their new lives.

It has been an absolute pleasure to personally support all individuals and families at Moorgate Mill through this journey and I share nothing but respect and pride for how they, their families and services have worked collaboratively to ensure their outcomes were achieved.
